action 5

Building up the Web Based Spatial Decision Supporting System (WB - SDSS)

The activities planned in Actions 5 represent the work of assembling the Web Based SDSS. They are substantially divided into 3 main groups of sub-activities: i) implementing the system modules and structure, ii) assembling and testing the system, iii) verifying the legal aspects of sensitive data.

Action 5.1

Implementing the Web based SDS software and hardware system

The implementation of essential tools including a user friendly interface to build up the WB-DSS is the main target of this action.

The DSS is designed as a 3-tier system. It is a client–server architecture in which the presentation, the application processing, and the data management are logically separate processes, as shown below:

  • The presentation tier is the topmost level of the application; it displays the information related to the services; it communicates with other tiers by outputting results to the browser/client tier and to all other tiers in the network.
  • The business logic tier (application Server) is pulled out from the presentation tier and, as its own layer, it controls an application's functionality by performing detailed processing.
  • The data tier consists of database servers; here information is stored and retrieved; this tier keeps data neutral and independent of application servers or business logic. Giving data its own tier also improves scalability and performance.

In the last few months several activities have been carried out, consisting essentially of filling with the contents (basically operative tools) the structure of the system which is already implemented.
The system is available at

Action 5.2

Integration and testing of the web based SDS System

With this action the performance, functionality and reliability of the integrated system (several modules integrated) will be verified.

The integration and testing (I&T) phase consisted in both individual and group tests on software and modules already implemented in the SDSS. The purpose of this phase was to ascertain the functionality, performance and reliability requirements. The WS- DSS was exercised through its interfaces using black box testing, simulating success and error cases via appropriate parameter and data inputs. The activities will continue with additional tests as follows. Simulated usage of shared data areas and inter-process communication will be tested and the individual subsystems will be exercised through their input interface. Test cases will be constructed to test whether all components within assemblages interact correctly.

Formally the action is concluded but the tests will continue until the end of the project. Cyclic tests are needed due to the nature of the system essentially a cyberinfrastructure.

Action 5.3

Supporting activities on critical features
The action is basically dedicated to all issues regarding the management and sharing of personal data, information and software licenses.

The activities planned for this action are strictly related to the nature or kind of data shared. Currently SOILCONSWEB is voluntarily supported by legal experts who will verify compliance in the project activities with the regulations and current standards on privacy issues.
